BOWING PROCEDURE PRIOR TO AND AT THE END OF CLASS As we are studying the traditional Martial Art of Ju Jutsu it is imperative that we maintain strict guidelines in the formalities of the art. All traditional Martial Arts start with respect and finish with respect. This is known as REIGI. This is why the bowing ceremony is an important part of Ju Jutsu. ASSEMBLING IN THE DOJO On the command of SEIRETSU we assemble in the dojo in order of grade, the instructor will then face SHOMEN the front of the dojo. He will then give the order to kneel, SEIZA. Once everybody has knelt down with their hands placed on their thighs the instructor will say MOKUSO this means meditate, the class then closes their eyes, relaxes and clears their minds in preparation for training. On completion of mediating the command of MOKUSO YAMATE will be given by the instructor. The class then opens their eyes, at this stage the highest graded student will continue the ceremony by saying SHOMEN NI REI which means, bow to the front of the dojo. Everybody then bows to the front of the dojo. During this bow, whilst the students remain in the bowing position the instructor will turn and face the class. Once the instructor is facing the class the students then rise from the bowed position, the highest student then says SENSEI or SEMPAI NI REI which is a formal bow to the instructor, at this stage everybody says ONEGAESHI MASU. The instructor will rise from the bow then the class will follow in order of grade. The instructor will rise to his feet. Once he is standing the class will follow in order of grade. When everybody is standing a formal standing bow is executed on the command of REI. The procedure is the same for the end of class with the addition that the whole class says DOMO ARIGATO GOZAIMASHITA (thank you for training) when performing the kneeling bow. LATE BOWING PROCEDURE When a student arrives late for class they must wait at the entrance of the dojo in the kneeling position and wait for acknowledgement from the instructor. On receiving this acknowledgement the student bows twice and says ONEGAESHIMASU (this is an apology for being late) they can then join the class.

SENSHIN NO OSHIE Bu o manabun to surumono mazu kokoro o tadase. Kokoro tadashi kara zareba buno miti mata tadashi karazu. Ken wa hito o kiru ni arazu, mi o osame o konai o tadasu, kore seiken nari. Jyaken wa hito o ushinai. Seiken wa hito o sukuu. Kore takara nari . Kono miti o manabumono tsune ni tenon o kanji kami o uyamai, sosen o tattobi . WORDS FROM THE OLD MASTERS Those who wish to study the way of the warrior must first correct the heart. If the heart is correct, the way of Bu will be correct. The sword is not for cutting a person down. It is for disciplining the self and training ones conduct. This is the True sword. An evil sword takes life. A true sword protects life. This is a treasure. If you wish to study this way, be grateful for the blessings of heaven, respect the gods, and honour your ancestors. Never lose your sense of honour and shame even for a moment. You must follow this way as though you had sworn an oath to the gods. |
